Human Rights! What does it mean?

I have to write an essay regarding the differences between individual and collective human rights. However, I am very confused on what IS individual human rights and what IS collective human rights. Thus, it is very hard for me to brainstorm the differences if I do not simply understand its meaning. I have tried google, and I can only get the definition of human rights. Nothing more... It would be very helpful if someone could give me detail on what they know, the differences, and if in their opinion it should be or should not be the state's responsibility to protect collective and individual human rights.
