I own a 1995 dodge ram 1500 4wd with 5.9 gas motor. Is the trans line temp sensor needed?

I just installed a new line and my old sensor will not fit in the new line. It is a little to big. As i had to wait 3 days for this line i am not in the position to wait for a new one and it not work either. I was told it would just lock the converter up all the time not using the sensor. I was told by a ford tech to either leave the plug open or wire the two wires together. Im not sure what to do. Any info would be great. I drove with the plug open ( not connected) and it keeps going in and out of overdrive erractily. I was thinking of trying to use a tap and die set to make the threads a little bigger but then there is the issues of metal shavings in the line. ( also not sure if i can locate a tap that big). What do you guys think i should do?
